Steam/ash plume from Etna’s Voragine this morning

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Over the past weeks, the volcano’s activity (at Voragine and the New SE crater) has generally decreased and tremor levels are currently low.
While not entirely stopped, the emissions of hot incandescent gasses and ash, along with weak strombolian activity from the new vent in the Voragine crater have become less pronounced. Similarly, the sporadic ash emissions from the New SE, observed intermittently until at least Saturday, have ceased or become even rarer.
This could rapidly change, however.

Katla (Southern Iceland): At least one earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred this morning under the volcano, the strongest recorded for Katla in recent decades. It was felt in nearby areas.
The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported two quakes, one at 01:47:02 local time at 3.8 km depth 8.1 km east of the summit (Goðabunga) followed 20 seconds later by another magnitude 4.5 quake at 0.1 km depth. Caution is required as these data are from automatic calculations which could actually in fact describe only one quake.

During the past 48 hours, IMO has detected 48 earthquakes – most of them tiny, but including 4 of magnitudes of 3 or higher – at shallow depths under Katla.

Klyuchevskoy (Kamchatka): The activity of the volcano, mainly effusive, remains intense. There are currently 3 active lava flows descending the steep stratovolcano: two parallel ones on the eastern-southeastern flank and a new one on the upper southwestern slope which has appeared about a week ago.
An intense thermal anomaly corresponding to the large output of lava is visible on satellite data.
Small ash plumes from strombolian activity in the summit crater have been producing plumes today that reached 20,000 ft (6 km) altitude and drifted eastwards today.

Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): Low-level ash emissions occur at the volcano, producing a plume at estimated 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude drifting west from the volcano.
The latest Terra satellite image shows a narrow plume of mostly gas and possible light ash content extending about 70 km to the west of Bougainville Island.
A moderate thermal hot spot is visible on MODIS data and has increased recently. This suggests that the volcano’s activity (effusive or mildly explosive or both) has picked up recently.

Copahue (Chile/Argentina): Strombolian activity continues in the El Agrio crater at fluctuating, generally low intensity.
Occasionally, incandescent bombs are projected higher than the crater rim and small ash plumes rise up to a few hundred meters before dissipating.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): The activity of the volcano remains essentially unchanged at currently low to moderate levels. The slow growth of the lava dome continues as viscous (sticky) lava accumulates in the dome. A (small) part of the inherently unstable dome collapsed yesterday morning and generated a pyroclastic flow that traveled down the SW valley between the dome and the remnants of the 1964 collapse scar, which forms a horse-show shaped wall around the dome.
The flow reached approx. 1500 m length and was 300-400 m wide. A second flow of similar size occurred immediately after. The resulting ash plume rose approx. 1 km.

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): The volcano’s activity has picked up again. Since yesterday, webcam images show constant red glow and intense degassing as well as intermittent ash emissions some of which have also been reported by Tokyo VAAC.
Most likely, a new phase of intense strombolian activity is currently taking place at the active O-Take crater on the remote island.

Dukono (Halmahera): Continuous ash emissions have been observed during the past days. Satellite images show a plume extending into various directions (to the east today).
In short, the intense activity of the volcano (one of the most active of Indonesia) observed also during recent visits by various people seems to continue.

Yasur (Tanna Island, Vanuatu): Wellington VAAC reports ash plumes, mostly confined to Tanna Island, visible on satellite imagery today. This suggests that activity at the volcano is elevated at the moment. It is urrently at GeoHazard’s level 2, on a scale of 0-5 (5 being highest), meaning that “volcanic explosions remain intense, volcanic bombs may fall in and/or around the crater and volcanic gas and ashes can also affect some villages.”
Yasur is one of the few in the world with persistent strombolian activity, is elevated at the moment. We will visit the volcano again in September and report from on location.

Aoba (Vanuatu): Wellington VAAC received a pilot report of plumes of white steam and ash rising 1000 ft (300 m) above the active crater lake Voui this morning. This could suggest that perhaps some phreatic explosions have taken place, but it is far from certain whether the volcano (with almost no monitoring on ground) is about to erupt or not.
The remote location of the volcano’s large caldera and its extremely difficult make direct observations very rare.
 
According to GeoHazard, “Aoba probably should be considered at present times as the most dangerous volcano of the archipelago, due to the presence of a large lake in the main crater.”
Strong explosive eruptions have been frequent in the past, generating dangerous mud flows that left thick lahardeposits in the central part of Ambae island and up to the coastlines.

Santiaguito (Guatemala): The series of strong vulcanian explosions continues although they hve become rarer. This morning, another one occurred that produced a mushroom-shaped eruption column that rose to approx. 18,000 ft (6 km) altitude.
Partially collapsing parts of the eruption column generated moderately large pyroclastic flows on the eastern side and perhaps on the SW slope of the lava dome as well. As usual, ash falls have occurred in nearby towns and villages such as San Felipe and Mazatenango Retalulehu.

Brava (Cape Verde): Seismic activity has decreased since its peak with shallow earthquakes around 2 August which had triggered fears that a new eruption could occur in the near future. Authorities remain at alert while groups of scientists are currently monitoring the situation.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): The series of relatively frequent explosions continues. One this morning at 11:03 local time sent an ash plume to 1600 m above the summit.

Reventador (Ecuador): At the moment, this is Ecuador’s most active volcano. According to the Istituto Geofisico (IGEPN), its activity is “high”. A lava dome continues to grow at the summit crater.
Strong degassing generates a plume of steam and gas rising 500-1000 m and frequent small to moderate explosions produce ash plumes that rise to similar heights. In total, IGPEN counted 38 explosions during an 24 hour interval, based on seismic and webcam observations. Most of the time, these can not be observed directly due to frequent cloud cover.
Based on satellite observations, a stronger ash emission was reported by VAAC Washington this afternoon (at 14:18 UTC) with an ash plume reaching 19,000 ft (6.5 km) altitude, or approx. 2 km height above the crater.

Cotopaxi (Ecuador): The activity of the volcano, both internal (seismic, deformation etc) and at the surface, remains low. IGEPN reports that mild steaming and degassing continue.

Nevados de Chillán (Central Chile): Small, sporadic ash emissions continue to occur at the volcano on most days since they re-appeared in late July, showing that the volcano’s superficial hydrothermal system remains disturbed.
According to SERNAGEOMIN volcanologists, this new phase of surface activity is being caused by a small magma intrusion at 4-5 km depth which interacts with (transfers heat and gasses into) the overlying system of circulating fluids (water and gasses) which can become over-pressurized and then generate explosions at the surface (= phreatic activity).

Bristol Island (United Kingdom, South Sandwich Is): The eruption on the remote island seems to have come to and end or paused.
During the past 2 weeks, no more traces of ash emissions or lava flows have been detected on satellite imagery and the heat signal has decreased to more or less zero.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): The effusive and explosive activity at the volcano continue at currently relatively low levels. Occasional small avalanches occur from the active dome, but little or no glow can be seen on night-time webcam imagery, suggesting that the effusion rate is at the lower end at the moment.

Chirpoi (Kurile Islands, Russia): SVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Snow, a volcano of Chirpoi, was detected in satellite images during 18 and 20-24 July. Steam-and-gas emissions were visible drifting SW on 16 July and may have contained minor amounts of ash. Steam-and-gas emissions during 22-24 July drifted as far as 90 km N. The Aviation Color Code remained at Yellow.

Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): A small ash emission from the volcano was reported yesterday evening. According to Darwin VAAC, a plume at approx. 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude extended 35 km west from the volcano.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): Explosive and effusive activity continue with no significant changes at relatively low level. Almost every day, the lava dome produces small to moderate ash explosions at the summit.

Semeru (East Java, Indonesia): During an ongoing tour in East Java, our small group observed glow and mild explosive (strombolian) activity from Semeru volcano’s summit crater. The lava flow in the southern ravine was inactive.

Kilauea (Hawai’i): As of yesterday evening (morning in Hawai’i), the new sea entry of the “61G” lava flow near the Kamokuna area continued to be active with and was at least 20 meters wide, spilling over the older sea cliff.
It can be expected that the sea entry will widen over time. Another lobe of the main flow has been advancing along the west margin and might hit the ocean soon as well.
At the summit and Pu’u ‘O’o crater on the eastern rift zone, no significant changes have occurred. Halema’uma’u lava lake has risen a bit again to approx. 23 m below the crater floor rim and the lava pond inside Pu’u ‘O’o is active as well.

Pavlof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Weak eruptive activity has been observed at the volcano in the form of intense steaming and small ash emissions and the aviation color code was raised to orange yesterday.
Most likely, the summit crater vent is currently producing strombolian-type activity, possibly along with the effusion of lava flows. Seismic activity has been elevated.
 
According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), “vigorous steam degassing was observed in web camera images from Cold Bay (35 miles or 60 km SW) and Black Hills (20 miles or 35 km NNE) this morning. Satellite observations and pilot reports indicate minor amounts of ash associated with the steam cloud at an altitude of less than 15,000 ft (4.5 km) above sea level.”

Colima (Western Mexico): Intermittent explosions continue at the volcano from time to time, but with comparably low intensity. No or little glow is visible from the volcano’s summit at night, suggesting that the magma column is relatively deep inside the conduit currently.

Pacaya (Guatemala): Mild strombolian activity continues from the Mackenney crater. According to a recent report, this activity ejected glowing material to 75 m above the crater and weak incandescence could be observed from the crater at night.

Fuego (Guatemala): Another intense eruptive phase with strong explosions, lava fountaining and abundant lava flow activity is in progress at the volcano.
After increasing gradually over the past week, the new so-called paroxysm (the 12th such phase in 2016 according to INSIVUMEH) started yesterday morning and seems now to be at its peak. Strombolian-type explosions and/or pulsating lava fountains eject glowing lava to 400 m or more, generating abundant glowing avalanches on the upper cone, and are accompanied by shock waves that can be felt in up to 15 km distance.
Two lava flows of each about 2000 m length are descending the Las Lajas and Santa Teresa gullies on the southeastern flank.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Sporadic, usually small ash emissions continue to occur from time to time (every few days) such as last night (s. image attached). These explosions are likely phreatic in nature, i.e. driven by steam explosions inside the currently unstable hydrothermal system heated by an underlying magma intrusion at shallow depth.
On 24 July, Washington VAAC reported a possible ash plume from Ruiz that rose to an altitude of 7.2 km (23,000 ft) a.s.l.
On 26 July, an ash plume was detected that rose to an altitude of 6.9 km (22,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W.

Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion): Signs that a new eruption of the volcano in the near future could be in the making have been increasing. In a bulletin yesterday, the volcano observatory (OVPF) reported elevated seismic activity, deformation and gas emissions that are consistent with the rise of magma to shallow depths.
The recent seismic unrest began on 13 July; since then, OVPF recorded 163 shallow volcano-tectonic earthquakes (at depths within 2 km below the summit), including two swarms on 19 and 26 July, as well as 226 small collapses and rockfalls in the Dolomieu Crater.
