I think we can all agree that the likelihood of a nuclear war was contoured very nicely on this year’s news feeds. People all over the world know that North Korea is preparing its missiles for an attack against the US, but no one knows if the threat is real or it’s just an image stunt.

Besides the scary test launches performed by North Korea’s army, there is nothing to indicate that this is a real threat. However, the idea stands and the ruler in Pyongyang fuels it with new actions such as safety drills that teach the population what to do in the case of a nuclear attack.

Now, while American senators and politicians accuse North Korea of running illegal nuclear programs, it seems to have little to no effect on the outcome of this deadly game. However, the extremely sad side is that, in the case of a nuclear attack, the entire planet will suffer not just North Korea or the US. We are in the middle of a possibly fatal confrontation that could throw us in the next Ice Age, and this is definitely a scary thought.

But could we survive such a horrible attack? According to specialists in survival and military training, survival is possible, but only if you know the steps to take. That’s why below you’ll find more information on how a nuclear attack works and the steps to take in order to make sure you survive. After all, it’s the stake is none other than the survival of the human race!

The nuclear standoff between the United States and North Korea has intensified to a level that can lead nowhere good. It’s time to talk about how to prepare for a nuclear attack.

First, here’s some of the recent chatter.

Last weekend, incendiary words between the two countries leave little doubt in anyone’s mind that a nuclear attack is likely to happen. The international smack-talk is leading somewhere.

Many people strongly believe that this is a media creation and that North Korea isn’t actually a threat. Even if that is the case, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that an attack could happen on US soil, regardless of the perpetrator. (More on the topic of potential false flags here.) Although we must always watch the news with a healthy dose of skepticism, this isn’t the purpose of the article. Survival is.

Here’s a quick summary of what has been going on over the past week, according to the global media:

Aug. 3: After a successful ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) test, North Korea threatened to send “unexpected ‘gift packages” and said that America is “on the knife’s edge of life and death.” At this point, experts established that an ICBM bearing a nuclear warhead could reach New York City within an hour.

Aug. 5: The UN imposed economic sanctions on North Korea that could cost the country up to one billion dollars. (source)

Aug. 6: President Trump threatened North Korea. He told reporters, “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States.  They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”

Referring to North Korea’s volatile leader, Kim Jong-un, Mr. Trump said, “He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said, they will be met with fire and fury, and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.” (source)

Aug. 8: North Korea’s state-run news agency, KCNA, said their military was “examining the operational plan” to strike the US territory of Guam with strategic ballistic missiles. CNN reported, “Specifically, the statement mentioned a potential strike on Andersen Air Force Base designed ‘to send a serious warning signal to the US.’”

Aug, 9: North Korea dismissed Trump’s threat and called it a “load of nonsense,” stating that only “absolute force can work on the president. (source)

Whether this is propaganda or not, we should be on high alert. A very real threat has been established, let’s move on to actions that we can all take in order to make ourselves safer.

Would a nuclear attack kill us all or cause a global nuclear winter?

I got a message from a reader the other day that encompasses what a lot of us are thinking:

N. Korea now has a Nuke or Nuke capabilities. Do you beef up your preps, wait for the chips to fall, kiss your butt goodbye, or other? Should we be acting business as usual?

First, let me dispel two myths about a nuclear attack.

We won’t all die or wish we were dead if a nuclear strike occurs. The movies – as much as I love them – have done us a terrible disservice here. If you are at Ground Zero of an attack, there is absolutely nothing you can do. Everything will be vaporized and that’s that. However, if you are outside the immediate blast zone, it is completely survivable and I don’t mean survivable in the horrible, lingering death kind of way. I mean, unharmed. You just have to know exactly what to do immediately in order to protect yourself. More on that in a moment.

We won’t suffer a nuclear winter. Everything thinks it will be like the post-apocalyptic scenario in that horrible book/movie, The Road. People aren’t going to be trying to eat each other. In that particular plot, the nuclear war was so great that a huge cloud of ash covered the planet. In reality, it would take hundreds of nuclear strikes to cause something like that, which is unlikely to occur. This isn’t to downplay the horror and death of one strike, but to point out that the aftermath isn’t going to make the quality of life on Earth as terrible as what the movies portray.

Here is what would happen if a 10 kiloton nuclear strike occurred.

Contrary to popular belief, a nuke won’t kill everyone within hundreds of miles. If you aren’t in the immediate blast radius, a nuclear strike is absolutely survivable.

The one-mile radius around the blast will be virtually unsurvivable. Within two miles, people will suffer 3rd-degree burns from the intense wave of heat.

If you are within 10-20 miles of the blast, the winds will be coming at about 600 miles per hour. This will take down buildings and cause a tremendous amount of pressure. Some experts recommend that you keep your mouth open to try and reduce the pressure on your eardrums. Looking at the blast could cause permanent blindness.

According to the DHS, 10 kilotons is the approximate size of nuclear weapon we could expect.

  • Nearly everyone within a half mile radius of the point of impact would die and most of the buildings would be demolished. This would be considered Ground Zero.
  • The area within the next half mile would suffer extensive damage, fires, and serious injuries.
  • Areas within three miles could see minor injuries to people and slight damage to their homes.
  • The fallout would kill even more people. According to the DHS:
  • Within 10 to 20 miles of the explosion, radioactive exposure would cause nausea and vomiting within hours and death without medical treatment.
  • But for those near enough to the blast, experiencing more than 800R of radiation, not seeking shelter immediately would cause deaths with or without medical treatment, the study found.
  • People would not be able to evacuate this area as fallout would arrive within just 10 minutes.

People upwind of the strike and outside the 20-mile radius would be unlikely to suffer any effects. People downwind would need to take shelter. Deaths from cancer that is related to the fallout could occur for many years after.

Here’s what I’m doing to prepare for a nuclear attack.

As cool as it would be to have one, you don’t have to have a bunker to survive if you take the time now to get prepped. You can survive by learning everything you can to prepare for a nuclear attack.

So, here’s what I’m doing.

Every time a new threat rolls around, I discover that while I have many of my bases covered, there are a few things I hadn’t accounted for. A nuclear threat is no different. There were some supplies I had to pick up myself, particularly a bigger supply of no-cook food.

Part of your preparations will depend on where you live, so this will be different for everyone. Are you near any places that are likely targets? Places like Washington DC, Hawaii, New York City, Los Angeles, and large military bases are more likely targets than say, a low population area in the midwest. Of course, this doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Just that it’s less likely.

Are you in a house or an apartment building? What is the best place in your home to seek shelter? Plan all of this ahead of time. If you know exactly what steps you are going to take, you will be able to better perform them under pressure.

Here are some key points to consider.

You won’t have a whole lot of notice.

Scientists say that residents of Hawaii would have only 8-12 minutes notice if an ICBM was headed their way, and residents of New York City will have an hour. Clearly, there won’t be time to run to the store – and if you did, you’d be fighting it out with a bunch of terrified, panicked people – so get your supplies together now.

You could be in your car.

If you are in your car, make certain to turn the vent to recirculation so that you don’t bring any outside air into the vehicle. Your goal should be to immediately get to shelter.

Be prepared to go into lockdown.

In nearly every case, staying home is the best course of action. Imagine you are in New York City and this nuke is headed your way. If you try to evacuate, you are most likely to get stuck on one of the bridges on the way out of Manhattan and that would be far more deadly than hunkering down in your apartment and hoping you are outside the half mile radius of Ground Zero. Experts say that you should plan to stay sheltered for a minimum of 9 days. Our personal plan is 14-21 days, depending on proximity and wind direction. I’d rather err on the side of caution, personally.

During a talk on surviving a nuclear attack, professor Iwrin Redlener, US specialist on disaster preparedness, said: “In that 10 to 15 minutes, all you have to do is go about a mile away from the blast.

“Within 20 minutes, it comes straight down. Within 24 hours, lethal radiation is going out with prevailing winds.”

Prof Redlener said you should feel for the wind and begin running perpendicular to it – not upwind or downwind

He said: “You’ve got to get out of there. If you don’t get out of there, you’re going to be exposed to lethal radiation in very short order.

“If you can’t get out of there, we want you to go into a shelter and stay there. Now, in a shelter in an urban area means you have to be either in a basement as deep as possible, or you have to be on a floor – on a high floor – if it’s a ground burst explosion, which it would be, higher than the ninth floor.

So you have to be tenth floor or higher, or in the basement. But basically, you’ve got to get out of town as quickly as possible. And if you do that, you actually can survive a nuclear blast.”

The most hazardous fallout particles are readily visible as fine sand-sized grains so you must keep away from them and not go outside if you see them. (source)

While I’m not a professor, I would not be trying to run perpendicular. I’d be trying to get inside to shelter, ASAP.

Fortify your home against fallout.

  • Use duct tape and tarps to seal off all windows, doors, and vents. Get a LOT of duct tape and tarps.
  • Turn off any type of climate control that pulls the outside air into your home. Expect to survive without heat or air conditioning for the duration.
  • Close off your chimney.
  • If someone enters the home, make certain that there is a room set up that is separate from other family members so that they can decontaminate. All clothing they were wearing should be placed outside and they should immediately shower thoroughly.
  • Make a breezeway for putting things outdoors (like pet or human waste.)  Hang heavy tarps around the door and put on disposable coverallsglovesshoe covers, and masks if you have to actually go out. Disrobe, discard the disposable clothing by tossing it out the door, and shower immediately when you get back inside.
  • If you don’t have a basement, go to the most central part of your house and erect as many barriers as possible. If there is no central area without windows and exterior walls, go to the room furthest away from prevailing winds.

Have enough supplies on hand to wait out the danger.

As with many emergencies, you need to be prepared to survive at home without help from anyone. It’s unknown whether water and electricity will be running, and if the water is running, whether it will be safe to drink. Prep as though you won’t have access to these utilities and if you do, then it’ll be a pleasant surprise.

  • Stock up on emergency food. (Get Non-GMO Emergency Food in bulk HERE) In our current home, all of my emergency cooking methods rely on me being able to go outdoors. Because of this, I have stocked a one month supply of no-cook foods that do not require refrigeration. Canned vegetables and fruits, canned beans, pouches of rice and quinoa, crackers, peanut butter, dried fruit. You get the idea. The eating may not be exciting, but we won’t starve to death. You can find a more thorough list of no-cook foods here.
  • Have a supply of water for all family members and pets that will last throughout the 9-day waiting period that you need to remain indoors. (Or longer, which is what we’re planning.)
  • Get paper plates and cutlery in the event that the water isn’t running so you don’t have to waste your precious supply washing dishes.
  • Don’t forget a supply of pet food.
  • Make certain you have a potassium iodide supplement on hand to protect your thyroid gland. (Here’s how to use it.) And here’s another source for it – supplies are going fast.
  • Be prepared for the potential of a power outage.
  • If you have pets, have supplies on hand for their sanitation – you can’t let them go outside because not only would they be exposed, they would bring radiation in with them. So, pee pads, cat litter, etc, are all necessary. Solid waste can probably be flushed.
  • Have the supplies to create an emergency toilet. (This one is cheap and simple.)
  • Make sure to have a supply of any necessary prescription medications that will last through the time that you hunker down.
  • Have a well-stocked first aid kit. It’s entirely likely that medical assistance will not be available, and if it is, you’ll put yourself at risk by going out to seek it.
  • Have a way to get the news from the outside world. An emergency radio is a must.

Learn everything you can.

This is an overview but there is much more to learn about a nuclear event and the more knowledge you have, the more likely you are to survive without any ill effects.

You CAN survive if you prepare for a nuclear attack.

The only part of your survival that is in the hands of fate is whether or not you are at Ground Zero. The rest is up to you. You can’t expect the government to save you. You can only save yourself.

Get prepared. Today. Because we just don’t know what’s about to happen.

ReadyNutrition Readers, this article is going to highlight several effective naturopathic remedies to assist in the removal of radiation from the human body.  The information can be used if you are undergoing any treatments that have radiation therapy attached to them, such as chemotherapy, and can also be taken into consideration for preparation and survival.  We have Fukushima that is an ongoing release of radiation into the Pacific Ocean, and we also have a world situation where the nations are poised on the brink of thermonuclear war. Knowing what to do when this type of disaster occurs can save your life and those around you. The most important point to go from here is to educate yourself on what happens when a nuke is dropped.

Types of Radiation Exposure

Radiation affects the tissues and leads to cancer risks with long-term exposure.  For a really good expose on it, read Cresson Kearney’s “Nuclear War Survival Skills” series of information articles that give many different ways to protect against it.  The information is free and downloadable from the internet. In this type of emergency, it is paramount that you understand the differences in radiation exposure.

Contamination – This is usually unintended contact from radioactive material such as dust or liquid. This type of exposure may be internal or external, but nevertheless, causes poisoning to the body.
Irradiation –  This is the process by which an object is exposed to radiation, but not radioactive material. This usually occurs with x-ray machines, cancer treatments and blood transfusions. That said, the exposure can originate from various sources, including natural sources. Irradiation can involve the whole body, which, if the dose is high enough, can result in systemic symptoms and radiation syndromes or a small part of the body (i.e., from radiation therapy), which can result in local effects.

 7 Natural Supplements that Remove Radiation From the Body

Now we’re going to outline some aids you can use. Having these essential supplements on hand will assist in helping the body prevent the absorption of radiation. As well, it is recommended that each family member have a bottle each of these natural supplements stored.

  1. Calcium and Magnesium: these minerals combat the uptake of Strontium 90 by over 90% when taken. Studies were conducted by Dr. Linus Pauling showing how the calcium blocks the uptake of this dangerous radioisotope.
  2. Zeolite Clay: also combats Strontium 90 as well as Cesium 137, another dangerous radioactive isotope. It was used effectively for victims of Chernobyl.  Zeolites attach themselves to radiation and remove it at the cellular level.  The U.S. military uses Zeolite clay to line the floors of its weapons arsenals to help protect against radiation.  The clay can be taken (ingested) internally to remove radiation.
  3. Activated Charcoal: reduces radiation by neutralizing it. The ratio of reduction is 10 grams of activated charcoal will reduce 7 grams of toxic substance.  You already are aware of how important activated charcoal is regarding water purification; now you can add this medicinal use to your preparation supplies.
  4. Bee Pollen: can drastically reduce the harmful side effects of radiation exposure. This is beneficial to those undergoing chemotherapy.  The side effects such as that of radium, x-rays and cobalt-60 radiotherapy can be buffered against with the bee pollen.  Bee pollen intake is a natural method of boosting vital functions, such as red and white blood cell and antibody production.  These functions are hampered by radiation, be it an uncontrolled release or a controlled therapy.
  5. Oils: Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and hemp oil can remove radiation. Studies have shown that the lipids in these oils (and other oils as well) bind to toxins, as well as strengthening cellular membranes.  Various studies agree that if you have been exposed, drinking 4 ounces of oil can neutralize the toxins and help pull the radiation out of your system, as well as strengthening your cellular tissues.
  6. Chlorella: is a single-celled green algae that is extremely useful in detoxification of tissues; it can be used concurrently with the other aids mentioned for the removal of radiation from your system.
  7. Iodine tablets: use those approved specifically for a nuclear disaster/exposure to radiation. The way they work is that they are taken up by the Thyroid gland, and in essence “crowd” the gland…blocking further uptake from the deadly forms of radioactive iodine (the harmful isotopes) found in a nuclear blast/nuclear accident.

As with all things, consult with your physician prior to utilizing any of these supplements, especially the calcium and magnesium.  Many heart patients use things such as calcium channel blockers and the like.  Too much calcium or any mineral can potentially upset the delicate balance in their system.  Check with the physician to find out about any potential problems or contraindications prior to utilizing the information in this article.  The information is presented for informational purposes only, and does not intend to diagnose, treat, or prescribe any cure or action.

Did you know that the Russians have a massive underground complex in the Ural mountains that has been estimated to be approximately 400 square miles in size?  In other words, it is roughly as big as the area inside the Washington D.C. beltway.  Back in the 1990s, the Clinton administration was deeply concerned about the construction of this enormous complex deep inside Yamantau mountain, but they could never seem to get any straight answers from the Russians.  The command center for this complex is rumored to be 3,000 feet directly straight down from the summit of this giant rock quartz mountain.  And of course U.S. military officials will admit that there are dozens of other similar sites throughout Russia, although most of them are thought to be quite a bit smaller.  But that is not all that the Russians have been up to.  For example, Russian television has reported that 5,000 new emergency nuclear bomb shelters were scheduled to have been completed in the city of Moscow alone by the end of 2012.  Most Americans don’t realize this, but the Russians have never stopped making preparations for nuclear war.  Meanwhile, the U.S. government has essentially done nothing to prepare our citizens for an attack.  The assumption seems to be that a nuclear attack will probably never happen, and that if it does it will probably mean the end of our civilization anyway.

Needless to say, the Russians are very secretive about their massive underground facility at Yamantau mountain, and no American has ever been inside.  The following is what Wikipedia has to say about it…

Large excavation projects have been observed by U.S. satellite imagery as recently as the late 1990s, during the time of Boris Yeltsin’s government after the fall of the Soviet Union. Two garrisons, Beloretsk-15 and Beloretsk-16, were built on top of the facility, and possibly a third, Alkino-2, as well, and became the closed town of Mezhgorye in 1995. They are said to house 30,000 workers each. Repeated U.S. questions have yielded several different responses from the Russian government regarding Mount Yamantaw. They have said it is a mining site, a repository for Russian treasures, a food storage area, and a bunker for leaders in case of nuclear war. Responding to questions regarding Yamantaw in 1996, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated: “The practice does not exist in the Defense Ministry of Russia of informing foreign mass media about facilities, whatever they are, that are under construction in the interests of strengthening the security of Russia.” Large rail lines serve the facility.

Back in 1996, the New York Times reported on the continuing construction of this site.  U.S. officials were quite puzzled that the Russians were continuing to build it even though the Cold War was supposedly over at that point…

In a secret project reminiscent of the chilliest days of the cold war, Russia is building a mammoth underground military complex in the Ural Mountains, Western officials and Russian witnesses say.

Hidden inside Yamantau mountain in the Beloretsk area of the southern Urals, the project involves the construction of a huge complex served by a railroad, a highway and thousands of workers.

Within the U.S. intelligence community, there was a tremendous amount of debate at that time regarding the purposes of this facility, but what everyone agreed on was that it was going to be absolutely massive…

If you’ve been paying attention to current events lately, you might have noticed that relations between the United States and Russia haven’t been so tense since the Cold War. Both sides have their agendas, which include competing visions for a future world order. Currently, they’re using various proxy forces to fight for control over the nation of Ukraine, much as they did during the Russo-Georgia war, and throughout the entirety of the Cold War. This isn’t the first, nor the last proxy war we’ll see with Russia in the years ahead. It should go without saying that since the same tensions we faced in the Cold War are coming back, we should expect the dangers of that era to make a comeback as well.

Interest in surviving a nuclear attack was my first foray into the survival and preparedness movement, way back when I was in middle school. Given that it was more than a decade after the Cold War ended, you could say that it was a peculiar obsession for a 13 year old boy to have at the time. While most people were prepping for a dirty bomb and checking their mail for white powder, I was asking my parents for Nuclear War Survival Skills for Christmas (I was a strange child with different priorities I suppose). Nonetheless, I learned a lot about making it through a nuclear attack, and had many myths dispelled on the subject. One of the biggest myths is that a nuclear attack would extinguish all life on earth (based on the unproven theory of nuclear winter), or that living in a major city is practically a death sentence.

Well…maybe it is, but not because of the nuke that just went off. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that in any breakdown of society, our vast cities, which are filled with unprepared, delusional, and violent people, will quickly turn into a murderous hell holes. I don’t doubt this, but that’s a people problem, not a nuclear problem. Since so much has been written on the subject of surviving an urban collapse, I’m mainly going to focus on surviving a nuclear blast, and the radioactive fallout that follows.

Location of The Blast

I should start this by showing you this nuclear war simulator. I suggest you bookmark it. Here you can select any location on Earth and see what the effects of a nuclear blast would be. You can decide whether it is an air or surface burst, the direction of the wind and the amount of radioactive fallout that would deposit (measured in rads), the size of the blast and an estimate of the casualties. Trying to figure out where the bombs will land is difficult to discern. Obviously the Russians aren’t going to tell us what they plan on bombing, and any map you see that shows you where the bombs will drop is based on educated guesswork.

That said, military bases, naval yards, or any industrial or economic structure that would be crucial to fighting a war, would be the most likely targets in any given city. The priority of a nuclear attack would be to obliterate our military, and civilians would be secondary targets. It’s still only a guess, but you can get a good idea of where the bombs will fall. In the simulator you can select the yield, and I would suggest you select anything from between 500 kilotons to 1 megaton, which is what the nuclear arsenals of Russia and the U.S. mainly consist of. Those twenty megaton nukes you see listed don’t really exist, or aren’t launch ready. During the Cold War, both sides realized you could do way more damage with twenty 1 megaton nukes, than you could with a single twenty megaton nuke.

Since we can’t be sure where a nuke will hit, the next best thing is knowing where the fallout will land. You should study the weather in your area and get a pretty good idea of where the wind is going on any given day, and if it changes during different seasons. If you happen to check the weather every morning before going to work, it might just save your life. When the attack occurs you’ll know where the bomb landed (I promise), and you can gauge where the fallout will settle.

Taking Shelter

The worst of the blast radius will be around 3 miles in diameter. Obviously there will be massive structural damage in that range. Most structures outside of that range would survive though, so it would be wise to take shelter in just about any building you can if this is on short notice. If it’s not short notice, then you should be at home with your preps, and most likely your house or apartment complex will be outside of the blast radius. Remember, we don’t know for sure where the nuke(s) will strike. Your best chance for long term survival is where your family and supplies are. There may be a sturdier structure nearby that would better withstand the blast, but could you really take your supplies to a public building where other survivors will be waiting it out, and not expect to be robbed? If you can help it, you’ll want to avoid any public shelter.

Speaking of which, if you used that simulator, you probably observed that the radiation is going to be significantly worst in the outlying suburbs than in the city, and that’s an important observation to make. Hiding in a parking garage a mile north of the blast radius and the fallout, means you can leave once the blast is over. But if you took shelter in a building anywhere from a mile to a hundred miles downwind, and you’re there when the fallout lands, you’re going to be stuck with a bunch of scared strangers until the radiation dissipates to manageable levels (two weeks at most). I imagine it will start looking like Lord of the Flies in short order. Once that blast is over, you might only need to flee for a couple miles to get out of the way of the fallout. You should do so without delay and by any means. That close to the blast, you’ll probably have about 10-30 minutes before the fallout begins to touch the ground

Whatever shelter you’re hiding in, there will be certain precautions you have to take. Many of the lessons you’ve heard about surviving earthquakes, hurricanes, and explosions are applicable here, because frankly, surviving a nuclear blast is like withstanding an earthquake, hurricane, and an explosion all at the same time.

I hate to say it, but you should probably duck and cover. I know I know, just like Bert the Turtle. It sounds ridiculous these days. Duck and cover drills have become the longest running joke of the Cold War, as if the government was trying to convince everyone that they could survive a nuclear explosion by hiding under their desks, but in reality it would be a wise thing to do. For many miles in all direction, windows are going to shatter. You could be safely out of the blast radius, but still die from a face full of glass and debris. So quit giggling and get under a table. Try to cover your body in any fabric you can find. While the blast radius will be around 3 miles in diameter, the next 3 miles will give you third degree burns, so cover your skin and close your eyes to prevent the blindness that can easily occur from looking at the blast (thankfully it’s usually temporary, only a handful of people from Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffered permanent blindness).

And finally, keep your mouth open. Depending on how close you are, you would most likely be faced with 1-50 psi of overpressure (20 or more being pretty unsurvivable without shelter). You can read this to get a good grasp of the effects of overpressure. The shock wave will shred any air filled organ, and by keeping your mouth open (don’t hold your breath), you can relieve a lot of that pressure.

Dealing With Fallout

Even if you escaped the worst of the fallout, you’ll still need to take precautions against the radiation. Even 1-10 rads per hour can wreck your body, it’ll just take longer. By looking at the simulator, you can tell that even if you escape the heavy 1000 rads per hour area, the fallout area is so large that there’s a good chance that your home will be under 1,10, or 100 rads per hour. Luckily, these levels will dissipate rather quickly into a more manageable level.

The radioactive decay of a nuclear bomb goes by the 7/10 rule. Every 7 fold, the radiation level is reduced to 10 percent of its original power. So if we’re talking about being in an area that’s facing 1000 rads per hour(R/hr) then 7 hours after the blast it will be reduced to 100 R/hr. After 49 hours it will 10R/hr. A little over two weeks later it will be 1 R/hr. So if you’re in an area that has only 100 R/hr, then after a couple of days it will be safe to leave your home or shelter for an hour or so at a time. When deciding where to take shelter, dirt and concrete are your best friends. 2 feet of concrete and 3 feet of packed earth will stop 99.9 percent of gamma radiation. So being in the interior of an apartment building would probably be pretty safe. You’ll want to seal off the windows and doors with duct tape to prevent fallout particles from getting in (many of which will be microscopic), and stay away from the ground level if you can help it. You have to think about shielding yourself in all directions, so depending on how the building is constructed, you may not have a lot of shielding above you on the top floor, and you may not have enough around you on the bottom floor.

If you live in a townhouse, you’ll want to get in the basement and start moving furniture and everything else in a concentrated area above you, and adding things like dirt and water into those items to make it as dense as possible You want to get as much material as you can between you and the fallout, like so:

You may also need to shovel some dirt over the basement windows, since most of this fallout is going to be on the ground level. If you happen to be stuck in a 1000 R/hr zone, then only a proper fallout shelter made of brick or concrete will save you. And don’t forget to incorporate some kind of system of ventilation while you’re at it.

I see I’m beginning to run this article a little longer than I intended. This isn’t a complete guide on the subject, and all of the factors and strategies involved in surviving a nuclear war could fill several books. Consider this a primer on the subject to get you thinking about it, and consider that a nuclear war is a survivable disaster, even in the city. Granted, it is still harder to survive than in the countryside, and the conditions will be a little more out of your control, but you can survive! I will suggest again that you check out Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson H. An Urban Guide to Surviving a Nuclear Attack

Every prepper has his/her own idea of what a major disaster will look like and how likely it is to occur.  However, one of the most catastrophic–not to mention scientifically plausible–is the EMP strike, which could be either natural or manmade.

EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse, and occurs in the form of a large burst of electromagnetic radiation that has the potential to disrupt electricity, radio waves, magnetic fields, Wi-Fi, and most other forms of electric currents we use on a daily basis.

The Effects of an EMP

Whether a potential EMP comes in the form of a manmade nuclear attack or a natural solar flare, the effects could be disastrous.  Granted, the devastation would largely depend on the strength and severity of the pulse and the location toward which it was geared.

In the worst-case scenario, an EMP could result in a total grid-down scenario and loss of all things electricity.

While this would cause most of mankind to resort to primitive measures of survival not seen since the Dark Ages, certain members of society would fare far worse than others.  Among the most at-risk for prolonged survival after an EMP are the elderly, the disabled, and young children and babies.

These individuals often require personalized medical care that involves the use of electronic systems, from diabetes test meters to respiratory aids to heart monitors, the functionality of which are threatened by an EMP.

Protecting Your Essential Electronics

empWith so many categories of individual at heightened risk of losing their life-support systems after an EMP strike, its important to have backups of the most essential life-sustaining devices stored in EMP-proof containers for the best chance at long-term.

Again, the effects electronic systems will suffer from an EMP largely depend on its size and altitude.  Some solar flares and low-output nuclear bombs may have very little electromagnetic effect on the earth, but precautions should be taken nonetheless.

Essentially, anything that can operate on a charge or on batteries when not plugged into an AC outlet is likely to be spared from an EMP attack.  If the device is kept away from other large metal objects and large swaths of wiring, it should remain relatively unharmed and continue to operate as long as its charge or batteries last.  Some electronics are inherently EMP-proof, including large electric motors, vacuum tube equipment, electrical generators, transformers and relays, and other large systems often housed in surge-resistant housing.

The Faraday Cage

One survival tool for electronically sensitive equipment is the Faraday cage, a metal box designed to absorb the surge of an EMP without harming its contents. Whatever it is being stored in the Faraday cage must be insulated from the inside metal surface of the box, but should otherwise remain protected. Accordingly, the box should be constructed so that no large gaps or holes are present.

However, many containers are suitable for impromptu Faraday cages including ammunition cases, metal filing cabinets, truck bed cabinets, and the like.  Therefore the thickness of the box doesn’t make much difference in determining its effectiveness against EMP waves, though thicker metal is likely to work better overall (think a large safe).

A big myth is that an EMP will wipe out the electronic components of most vehicles. On the contrary, the metal construction of most cars and trucks act as virtual Faraday cages for the electronic components contained within.  Therefore, if you were to insulate your vital medical electronics in tin foil, put them in a makeshift Faraday cage, and store it inside your vehicle, it should be protected from most moderate EMP strikes.

Ultimately, it’s all about how you insulate and shield your devices.  Thus, a washer or dryer could be used to store some larger or obscurely shaped devices if needed, so long as all sides are made of metal and have a tightly fitting lid.

For most home and commercial electronic devices, surge protectors and lighting arrestors serve to protect the systems from failure in the event of a power outage–fortunately they will also protect them against the effects of an EMP. While a powerful surge could wipe out the grid and shut off electrical services, the devices themselves would not be harmed if plugged into a surge protector.  However, they would need to be run on a backup power source in the event of this happening.

For better or worse, since we have yet to experience an EMP strike, its unknown as to how effective surge protectors and resistors will be in a real-world event. In the end, the best way to protect vital electronics, like those medical devices needed to sustain life, is to keep them disconnected from external power sources, away from antennas, and shielded in a well-sealed and insulated Faraday cage.

About EMPs

EMPs are most commonly associated with nuclear blasts, and were first tested under the American nuclear weapons development of the 1940s and 50s.

EMPs occur with all nuclear explosions, though the effects are much more profound with larger magnitude blasts.  The earth generally absorbs nuclear attacks close to the ground, like those experienced at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so the effects of an EMP are confined to the areas affected by the blast and subsequent heat wave.  As the size and altitude of a nuclear blast increases, so too do the potential for greater EMP effects.

Thus, an EMP would deliver the most devastating effects to earth if a nuclear weapon exploded in space–or high in the earth’s atmosphere.  This would cause the gamma radiation released by the blast to strip electrons from the upper levels of the atmosphere and create electromagnetic radiation levels capable of disrupting most of earth’s electronic systems.

Accordingly, scientists and astronomers have long been studying the effects of the radiation produced by solar flares.  As far back as 1859 with the Carrington Event (from August 28 till September 2), the largest geomagnetic storm ever recorded occurred and disabled telegraph systems all across Europe and North America.

A study conducted by Lloyd’s of London and the United States’ Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) estimated the results of such a storm would have a $2.6 trillion effect on the world economy.

More recently, a series of solar storms in the 1970s was substantial enough to bring an end to the widespread use of CB radios, in addition to disrupting commercial radio and television transmissions.

Like any disaster, there’s no way of knowing the true effects of an EMP until it actually happens.  Ideally, we will never know what that experience is like, as it could mean utter devastation for most of mankind in its worse form.

For those dealing with life-threatening medical issues, losing access to electricity may be a life and death scenario.  Most evidence suggests the likelihood of a worst-case scenario is slim, but if your life depends on it you should take the necessary precautions.
