This is the power, hurtling from space, that could wipe us out like the dinosaurs. Or so they say.

It could be a close call, with the potential to collide with Earth. Still, it’s an incredibly minute chance.

Asteroids and meteors regularly pass by the planet, and not infrequently there are episodic peltings from space rock that hit random areas across the globe. Sometimes people are killed, and buildings are destroyed.

But the next one headed this way will be brushing by pretty closely, and could bring with it the power of billions of atomic bombs, enough reign down destruction across the planet.

Experts are saying a huge meteor is rocketing close to Earth with the power of THREE BILLION ATOMIC BOMBS, AHHHHHH.

China’s Purple Mountain Laboratory discovered the massive asteroid using Asia’s largest telescope, determining the meteor was passing our planet with a range of 18.8 times the distance between the Earth and the moon — aka, WAY too close for comfort.

But scientists are keeping a close eye on 2009ES as just a minor change in its flight path could have catastrophic consequences for the human race, due to its sheer mass.

But what about the chances of a truly ‘deep impact’ that could destroy all life on earth?

Well, of course, the chances are very, very slim. But how many times can we dodge a bullet simply due to improbability?

These things could happen. Let us hope they do not.

Both the Pentagon and Russia’s defense have been working on asteroid and meteor destruction system, including plans to shoot down incoming space rocks, as well as a plan to capture asteroids in a giant orbiting catch basket. That, and whatever else they cooked up from late night viewings of Hollywood disaster films.

But scientists are actually not just hoping to avert disaster; they have set a goal to capture one, and actually find the devastating prospect of an asteroid headed for earth somewhat attractive.

Researchers are strategizing about how to ‘capture’ an asteroid or meteor and force it into orbit – in order to study, explore and exploit it. Naturally, they could then take advantage of any resources it could offer (including near-Earth living space for some future colony project).

NASA has proposed the Asteroid Redirect Mission (or Asteroid Initiative), an unmanned robotic mission, to “retrieve” a near-Earth asteroid with a size of about 8.2 metres (27 ft) and a mass of around 500 tons (comparable in mass to the ISS). The asteroid would be moved into a high lunar orbit or orbit around EML2 (halo orbit, Lissajous orbit) for research and exploration purposes.[3][4] Under consideration for moving the asteroid are grabbing the asteroid and using solarelectric propulsion to “directly” move it, as well as gravity tractor technology.

The mission could provide a relatively low-cost route to satisfying Barack Obama‘s goal of sending astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025,[6] and help develop knowledge and skills useful for future asteroid impact avoidance, in-situ resource utilization (including water for astronauts and for producing fuel, and material for bulk shielding against cosmic rays, for use there or elsewhere in space) and other asteroid mining (as well as providing a first target for the latter two).

The whole things seems a bit disaster prone, without much room for error. Nonetheless, perhaps it could shield the planet, and yield some lemonade afterwards, too.

Will any of it work? I guess we’ll find out after several billion more in military spending gets sucked into the great black hole of the secret space agenda.

It’s not worth panicking over, but it is at least worth mentioning the “chance” that a giant asteroid could hit the planet.

Its calculated trajectory varies, with reports claiming it will arrive March 5, or between the 7th and 8th, and will hurl as close as 11,000 miles away from Earth, but that’s about as close as anything close to its size has come on record.

Lexi Morgan at Intellihub.com explains:

NASA has now updated its Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s close approach data to reflect a 22 hour window of uncertainty regarding asteroid 2013 TX68, which is currently set to nearly graze Earth.

NASA hopes the massive chunk of rock will pass safely by Earth at a distance of around 18,000 miles between the dates of Mar. 7, at 1 p.m. and Mar. 8, until 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

It’s also worthy to note that even if the asteroid safety passes the planet, it still has the potential to collide with the moon, orbiting satellites, the International Space Station or other space-based platforms.

The Sun story adds additional details:

NASA has admitted there is a chance the asteroid 2013 TX68, a 100ft-wide rock which is currently heading towards us, could impact earth.

The asteroid is due to pass earth on March 5 by as close as 11,000 miles however NASA says there is “a chance” it could actually hurtle into our planet on September 28, 2017.

But NASA puts the odds of this happening at “no more than 1-in-250-million.”

NASA has said it could be anywhere between 9 million miles and 11,000 miles. This large range is due to a wide range of possible trajectories since it was tracked for only a short time after discovery.

Though there’s only a fraction of a chance that we will be entering a doomsday scenario ripped from the pages of Hollywood in a period of just a few days from now, scientists also point out that it could wreak havoc on the moon, or satellite and man-made space infrastructure.

So, there could be noteworthy damage. Maybe.

Regardless, it is a reminder of the fragility and mortality of our condition here. There are many disturbing forces, and there is little reason to remain well adjusted to them.

Russia has just unveiled a plan to use ICBMs to blow up smaller asteroids/meteors that more frequently pelt their homeland. Chelyabinsk took an unexpected hit last year.

NASA has previously announced a nearly identical plan for United States defense against possible threats from space. The Daily Mail reported:

Dramatic proof that any of these can strike Earth came on 15 February last year, when an unknown object exploded high above Chelyabinsk, Russia, with 20 – 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

The resulting shock wave caused widespread damage and injuries, making it the largest known natural object to have entered the atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event, which destroyed a forest area of Siberia.

The Daily Caller reports:

The Russian government is going to revamp some of its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) in order to blow up asteroids before they reach Earth.

Apparently, the nuclear-armed ICBMs would be used to target asteroids with a 20 to 50 meter diameter (approximately 65 to 164 feet). Asteroids of these sizes are difficult to detect, and using an ICBM to take them out before they hit Earth would be the last line of defense preventing a potential catastrophe.

In an age where space has been weaponized, along with weather and climate, and foreign relations have returned to Cold War tensions, that could have layers of hidden intention as well.

“Unfortunately, we only know about roughly 1% of those asteroids that get down to the 30-meter size, so there’s a tremendous amount out there that we have yet to discover,” said Jason Kessler, NASA’s man in charge of identifying potential asteroid threats, to CNN.

Anyway, there could be surprises. Russia has certainly taken note of what could and has happened.

A newly discovered asteroid larger than a skyscraper will whiz past the Earth on Halloween, making a dangerously close approach to the planet.

The asteroid, officially named 2015 TB145, was just discovered on Oct. 10, 2015, and is expected to make its closest approach to the Earth at the end of the month.

Some have already given the asteroid the nickname of “Spooky” due to the fact that its closest approach to Earth is going to occur on Halloween.

Fortunately, the asteroid will miss the Earth, but it will still make an uncomfortably close approach of 302,885 miles. To put this in perspective, the average distance from the Earth to the moon is 238,900 miles.

The Nuclear Weapons Test Warning Network has detected 26 multi-kiloton asteroid hits since 2001. Based on these figures, asteroids impacting with Earth are 3-10 times more common and more likely in the future than scientists previously believed. Luckily for us these hits have been in remotely populated areas. That however is nothing more than luck…and if impacts of that magnitude continue to bombard Earth then one day soon we will find that our luck has run out.

Ed Lu CEO of The B612 Foundation which runs the Sentinel Mission to find and track asteroids says:

“This network has detected 26 multi-kiloton explosions since 2001, all of which are due to asteroid impacts. It shows that asteroid impacts are NOT rare—but actually 3-10 times more common than we previously thought. The fact that none of these asteroid impacts was detected in advance is proof that the only thing preventing a catastrophe from a ‘city-killer’ sized asteroid is blind luck. The goal of the B612 Sentinel mission is to find and track asteroids decades before they hit Earth, allowing us to easily deflect them.”

The Chelyabinsk asteroid was just 62 feet across, well below the 100 feet plus asteroids that were hunted by NASA, who have now lowered the threshold for the size of space rocks they hunt. It exploded with the force of 40 Hiroshima sized atomic bombs.

The Chelyabinsk asteroid roared through Earth’s upper atmosphere at an initial speed of around 19 kilometres per second — more than 50 times the speed of sound. At an altitude of between 45 and 30 kilometres, the heavily fractured, and hence rather fragile, body broke into pieces and finally burst into gas and dust at around 27 kilometres altitude.

“Luckily, most of the kinetic energy was absorbed by the atmosphere,” says Jiří Borovička, an asteroid researcher at the Astronomical Institute, part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Ondřejov, near Prague. ”A more solid rock that might have blasted closer to the ground would have caused considerably more damage.”

If a 62 feet wide rock explodes with the force of 100 times the Hiroshima bomb can you imagine the damage that would be caused of something like that made it just a few miles further through the atmosphere, it’s energy undissipated? New York, LA, London or any other city would be reduced to rubble, and the only thing between us and such an event is, by the admission of scientists, “blind luck”.

This does not fill me with confidence. The asteroid that exploded over Chelyabinsk—injuring more than 1,000 and damaging buildings in six cities—was a shocking reminder that Earth is a target in a cosmic shooting range. From the width of a football field to the size of a small city, these space rocks have the potential to be killers. In a collision with Earth, they, depending on their size, have the ability to set off deadly blast waves, raging fires and colossal tidal waves.

Originating in the asteroid belt far out in the solar system, these lumps of rock can be pulled into different orbits by the gravitational pull of the outer planets and their trajectory can be altered by forceful collisions with other asteroids. Once on a path through space, which is a vacuum, the asteroids will carry on down that same path unless they are knocked off course by something.  Impact craters on the Moon show that there have been many thousands of impacts, many of those would have been destined for Earth had the Moon not been in the way.

There are several well preserved strike sites in the United States, once again they are in relatively remote areas.

Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater approximately 43 miles (69 km) east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. It is the largest impact crater yet discovered in the United States. Because the United States Board on Geographic Names commonly recognizes names of natural features derived from the nearest post office, the feature acquired the name of “Meteor Crater” from the nearby post office named Meteor. The site was formerly known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, and fragments of the meteorite are officially called the Canyon Diablo Meteorite. Scientists refer to the crater as Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer, who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact. The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family through their Barringer Crater Company, which proclaims it to be “best preserved meteorite crater on Earth”.

A previously undetected asteroid entered the Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, 2,200 miles off the coast of Venezuela yesterday.

The rock, the size of a car is estimated to have had an impact energy of around 750 tons of TNT. Small in cosmic terms but enough to have caused massive problems if it had hit a population center.

It has been named 2014AA, a number letter combination that indicates it was the first asteroid discovered this year, sadly it was discovered somewhat late…like after it exploded.

This incident serves to remind us all that the mission to map all space debris, junk and rocks that are likely to pose a threat to the planet is far from complete.

In other space news sunspot AR1944 is now twice the size of Earth and contains a dozen dark cores with the magnetic energy to throw off powerful flares. The spot is so big it can be seen at sunset with the naked eye.

The effect of any flares today will be mitigated by the fact that the sunspot is not yet directly facing Earth. However, even an off-center blast from this behemoth could produce radio blackouts and geomagnetic activity.

NOAA has increased their estimate of M-class flares to 75% and X-class to 30% over the next 24 hours.

A strange object with six tails has been spotted in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, leaving astronomers dumbfounded and wondering what it could be.

“We were literally dumbfounded when we saw it,” said  an astronomer at the University of California. It’s “weird and freakish”, and is flaring off at least six comet-like tails, said another report.

“Even more amazing, its tail structures changed dramatically in just 13 days… That also caught us by surprise.”

“It’s hard to believe we’re looking at an asteroid,” said investigator David Jewitt of UCLA. Just add it to the list of what has been lighting up the sky lately, as Comet ISON is currently streaking towards its turn around the sun (NOV-28) while we expect to see it during December as perhaps the brightest comet we’ve ever seen… By the way, it is ejecting 122,000 tons of ‘matter’ every minute from its tail, and the earth will be traveling through the debris field of its tail during mid January.

Oh, and that massive fireball-meteor that injured nearly 2,000 people in February earlier this year as it exploded over a Russian city at 42,000 miles per hour…  scientists now say that even larger and more dangerous meteors — are probably four, five or even seven times more likely to hit the planet than they believed before the fireball, according to three studies published recently in the journals Nature and Science, according to Seth Borenstein / AP Science Writer.

“That means about 20 million space rocks the size of the one in Chelyabinsk (Russia) may be zipping around the solar system, instead of 3 million,” NASA scientist Paul Chodas said at a news conference.

And then there’s all of the fireball sightings recently being reported on the west coast, particularly SoCal, where one resident said, “just saw an absolutely INSANE meteor in the sky above Glendale, CA … Either that or the alien invasion has begun.”

And not to be outdone, the sun has been belting off an unbelievable number of X-class flares during the past weeks, something we have not seen in a very long time.

Who knows, maybe this latest bizarre sighting of the 6-tailed asteroid is…

“…a NASA project to test some new intra-system drive technology that the government hasn’t yet revealed because they need time to backfill scientific justification to conceal the truth that it came from the crashed UFO at Roswell.”

or,

“…the braking and steering jets of an incoming interstellar visitor. One third of the fight is spent accelerating, one-third is cruise , and one-third is slowing down and maneuvering.”

…or maybe it’s just the most bizarre asteroid that mankind has ever seen. It certainly is interesting, and yet another example of earthlings ‘suddenly’ finding something unexpected out in space. Let’s just hope it’s not heading towards us…Modern Survival Blog
