solar stormBy Jeremiah Johnson – Ready Nutrition

ReadyNutrition Guys and Gals, we’re going to be covering some basic information on solar storms, as it has been a much-ignored topic as of late.  The important thing to realize is that we have long been overdue for a sizable solar storm to hit the earth and affect it negatively. With scientists announcing that the solar cycle reached its peak in 2013, the subject drifted by the wayside and the public treat it as if it no longer a threat.  This stance, as we know, is not the way of the survivor: be prepared at all times, regardless of the type of emergency.  Mark my words, the single most important thing you need to understand is that a solar storm will happen again and we need to be ready for it. Now is the time to understand this natural phenomenon and its impact on our daily lives.

EMPs and Solar Storms

You can kill two birds with one stone and be ready for solar storms by preparing for an EMP, thus shielding sensitive equipment and the like and protecting it all from both events.  The big event associated with the sun that we must be aware of is the Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME.  These CME’s are huge heated plasma eruptions from the sun that are highly magnetic in nature, “vomited” into space by the sun.  These flares are no light, laughing matter: the “vomitus” is equivalent to hundreds of millions of megatons being detonated…picture a 1 megaton nuclear warhead…multiplied 200 million times!

Gamma rays and X-rays are sent forth, and in addition charged particles are accelerated to almost reach the speed of light.  The problems arise when all of this “confetti” reaches the earth…and affects the earth’s ionosphere and its magnetic field.  Most communications can be brought to a standstill and GPS becomes next to worthless.  These storms can also destroy satellites orbiting the earth and render them “dead” in terms of use.

Power Grids Will Cease

The power grids (almost all of them) have no protection from such an onslaught.  Catastrophic damage can be rendered to the transformers with an overload, causing overheating and even explosions to those without the proper shielding.  In the fairly recent past, the U.S. experienced the Carrington Storm of 1859 that gave rise to the name of a CME-precipitated storm as a Carrington Event.  If such a storm occurred today, the entire grid system of the U.S. would be wiped out. In fact, in recent years, a U.S. Congressman urged protection for power grids stating that an EMP attack “could bring our civilization to a cold, dark halt.”

In October of 2011, the NOAA instituted a program named Enlil that can give at least 6 hours of warning before a solar storm hits the earth.  In addition, SOHO (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) has 6 detectors that measure everything from solar winds to movements and oscillations on the surface of the sun.  These early warning devices are mostly managed by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The Carrington Event-class super-solar storm occurs usually only once every century or so.  Back in the 1859 storm, people saw the aurora’s of earth’s atmosphere so charged up that they thought the land was on fire and that cities were burning.  Power and telegraph lines were completely knocked out of commission.  More recently, in March 13 of 1989 the Quebec, Canada blackout occurred where 6 million people lost power in less than two minutes.  That storm was not even 1/3 as powerful as the 1859 Carrington storm.

The Time To Prepare for Solar Storms and EMPs Was Yesterday

Faraday cages and grounding rods for large room-sized cages are the way to go with protecting electronic equipment.  Should you have it protected for the likelihood of an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse), it will be more than sufficient to shield the equipment from a solar flare or Carrington Event.  The time to prepare is yesterday!  There are many books and resources that will help you to be able to shield the electronic devices you wish to save.  Solar storms are no joking matter; however, with the proper precautions you can protect against them as you protect your home, family, and supplies with any other disaster, be it natural or man-made.  Understanding them is the key, and I encourage you to research the topic continually, as new information always comes to light with time.  Have a great day, and keep up the fight!

Senate Intelligence Committee Debates Intelligence Reform

By Off The Grid News Staff

A former CIA director and former executive director of the EMP Task Force are charging that the Obama administration is failing to protect America from a potential power grid-crippling solar storm, choosing instead to conduct more studies on a potential disaster that could kill 90 percent of the population.

The article by former CIA director R. James Woolsey and former EMP Task Force executive director Peter Pry begins by applauding President Obama for being the first administration “to recognize that our high-tech electronic civilization” is vulnerable to solar storms and for warning the public that a rare “once-in-a-century geomagnetic superstorm” could destroy the power grid. Similar storms hit Earth in 1859 and 1921 but haven’t hit since.

But Woolsey and Pry said that the National Space Weather Action Plan – unveiled by an Obama-approved commission in October – does nothing. Woolsey served under President Clinton.

BIG Grid

By  – SurvivoPedia

By now, we all know about the potential catastrophic dangers of the high electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) from terrorists or WWIII, and likely solar flare events. Some preppers take it seriously and plan for it by taking certain measures and precautions to protect their equipment and electrical necessities.

The rest of us take a chance on the unlikelihood of terrorists getting their hands on enough sophisticated electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bombs or delivery methods.

And the fact that unless old sun actually whips the mother of all coronal mass ejections on us, no one knows for sure how bad it will be and there’s even a chance that most of the electrically civilized world will still survive, especially on the side not facing the sun.

By J. D. Heyes – Natural News

(NaturalNews) A special unit of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is dedicated to waging cyber warfare against the United States should the two nations become embroiled in a conventional conflict, with the goal of knocking out American infrastructure that is vital to the nation’s survival.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper recently told Congress that China’s and other countries’ cyber capabilities are so sophisticated that they are believed to even be capable of disrupting the entire U.S. power grid. If the outages are prolonged, it is believed that it could kill up to 90 percent of Americans, experts told a congressional panel in 2014.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee in September, Clapper said that the Chinese in particular have the capability to launch “a massive Armageddon-like attack against our infrastructure.” He did not say whether the U.S. possessed similar cyber capabilities, but it’s believed that the Pentagon’s cyber war capabilities are second-to-none.

BIG EMP TEST

By  – SurvivoPedia

Think about this scenario: suddenly, all electric devices stop working, and your first thought is that the power grid is down due to a temporary malfunction. You think that everything is going to turn back to normal in minutes, but six hours later you’re still in the dark. Is this just a simple blackout? Or the feared EMP has happened?

There is at least one way to get an easy answer. All you need to determine whether you are experiencing a regular power outage or an EMP are only three transistor AM/FM/ Shortwave radios. Find out how this works in the following article.

The following are statements made by former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director James Woolsey during an interview via forbes.com regarding America’s power grid security and the fact that it is the nation’s proverbial Achilles heel.

Among all the dangers posed to the grid (cyber-attack, solar flares, conventional bombing of critical substations), an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) may lead to a cataclysmic collapse that could plunge the nation into the dark for months, possibly even years, with no way to restart the system and little (or no) ability to investigate the type or source of the event.

While an EMP detonation may seem far-fetched, it is a “real and credible threat to the grid”.

Here’s what the former CIA director said:

solar flare

By Daniel Barker – Natural News

(NaturalNews) One morning in September, 1859, British astronomer Richard Carrington sat in his private observatory, drawing pictures of sunspots using a telescope which projected an image of the sun onto a screen.

As he drew and observed, there suddenly appeared a brilliant flash of white light on the surface of the sun. Startled, he ran to find witnesses to what he realized was a very unusual event, but by the time he returned, the massive solar flare that Carrington observed had mostly dissipated.

The next morning, shortly before dawn, skies around the globe lit up with colorful auroras so bright that “newspapers could be read as easily as in daylight,” as NASA describes the event.

In those days, of course, there was no electrical “grid” as we now have, but there were telegraph networks in various parts the world.

From the NASA website:

Telegraph systems worldwide went haywire. Spark discharges shocked telegraph operators and set the telegraph paper on fire. Even when telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the lines, aurora-induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to be transmitted.

If a solar flare of such magnitude hit the earth now with a gigantic burst of charged particles — and scientist say it is a matter of “when,” not “if” — our electrical grid would almost certainly be disabled, if not completely destroyed.
