At least three people were shot Monday morning at a building at the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy said, as authorities searched for an active shooter.
One of the wounded is a D.C. police officer, the Washington Post reports.
A defence official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak during an active attack, said there were several injuries.
The Navy said three shots were fired and that about 3,000 people work in the building. People inside the building were directed to shelter in place. Police and federal agents from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene and streets in the area were closed.
