January 01, 2013 – PAPUA NEW GUINEA – According to a late report from the U.S. Geological Survey, a strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook Papua New Guinea on December 29, 2012. The strong quake hit approximately 237 km southeast of Lorengau, Papua.
The quake was centered 240 km west-southwest of Kavieng, at a depth of 10.1 kilometres. The tremor did not immediately prompt any tsunami warnings by the U.S. National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or the Japan Meteorological Agency.
So far there have been no reports of damage nor loss of life.
