Scientists know it’s just a matter of time before another 9.0 or larger earthquake strikes somewhere between Northern California and Canada, the shaking alone would be catastrophic. But as most mega-thrust earthquakes occur near or below the sea, the huge energy release off the Pacific NW coast would cause a tsunami that would come from a fault line that’s almost identical to the one that caused the deadly 2004 tsunami in Indonesia.
Geologists believe the next Cascadia earthquake will be one of the largest on the planet, up to magnitude 9.0. Look what massive destruction was unleashed on Japan not only by the earthquake but the tsunami that followed. But a magnitude 9.0 releases many times more energy than what hit Japan so imagine what that could do to Portland or Seattle depending on the epicenter of the quake and the size of the tsunami.
Most likely in this scenario services would be cut off for days so make sure and have a plan for you and family by having the appropriate supplies to get you through at least the first 72 hours. A good place to start would be to pick up a quality 72hr Survival Kit and any other supplies you may think you need.
The last mega thrust was a simultaneous unzipping along entire length of the hazardous subduction zone in 1700.
